About ADINOX M422 Steel Bonding Adhesive

ADINOX® M422 is a steel bonding adhesive — a two-component, flexibilized toughened structural adhesive with a 10:1 mix ratio, formulated for bonding metals, thermosets and thermoplastics in industrial applications requiring flexibility and impact resistance.

Its thixotropic, gray methacrylate adhesive formulation is well suited for visible bond lines on stainless steel and aluminum, filling gaps up to 0.35 in without sagging and developing handling strength within minutes at room temperature. The combination of 100% elongation, lap shear strength and resistance to thermal cycling and vibration delivers reliable structural joints without extensive surface preparation.

Gap Filling - Fast Room Temperature Cure

Steel Bonding Adhesive for Visible Bond Line

  • Lap shear >3,000 PSI on stainless steel and >2,800 PSI on aluminum - cohesive failure
  • Gray cured color blends with stainless steel and aluminum for aesthetic joints
  • Ideal for architectural stainless steel railings, designer metal furniture, marine rail systems and structural signage
  • The steel bonding adhesive that requires little or no surface preparation

How to Use ADINOX M422?

Surface Preparation

  • Wear gloves and protective eyewear - work in a well-ventilated area
  • Surfaces must be clean, dry and free of grease, oil and contaminants - degrease with ADINOX® DS 400
  • Higher bond strengths are achieved on lightly sanded surfaces

Prepare the Adhesive

  • Purge the cartridge before installing the 10:1 static mixing nozzle
  • Discard the initial mixed material in the nozzle to ensure the proper mix ratio
  • Apply between 65°F and 85°F for optimal cure - lower temperatures slow cure, higher temperatures accelerate it

Bond and Cure

  • Apply enough adhesive to completely fill the gap - join parts within the 4 - 6 min open time
  • Immobilize the parts during the 10 - 15 min working time - do not move until handling strength is reached
  • Full cure in 24 h at 77°F - clean uncured adhesive with isopropanol, acetone or MEK; cured adhesive only by mechanical removal

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ADINOX M422 steel bonding adhesive?

ADINOX M422 is a steel bonding adhesive: a two-component, flexibilized toughened structural adhesive with a 10:1 mix ratio, formulated for bonding metals, thermosets and thermoplastics where flexibility and impact resistance are required.

Why is the gray color of M422 an advantage?

As a gray methacrylate adhesive, M422 blends with stainless steel and aluminum for aesthetic, visible bond lines — ideal for architectural railings, designer metal furniture, marine rail systems and structural signage. Unlike amber systems, the gray formulation carries no UV-yellowing limitation.

Is M422 resistant to chemicals and weathering?

Yes. After 30-day immersion (ASTM D 1002, Al/Al), M422 retains over 2,900 PSI against gasoline, xylene, 10% acetic acid, HD-30 oil, kerosene and hot water, and its strength increases after the 30-day environmental cycle.

What is the service temperature range?

This steel bonding adhesive performs from -40 to 250°F when cured, resisting thermal cycling with cohesive failure.

Which substrates does M422 bond?

It bonds stainless steel, aluminum (1000-6000 and anodized), carbon steel, ABS, PMMA, nylon, PBT, PPO, PVC, PET, polycarbonate, fiberglass (FRP), carbon fiber, Kevlar, wood and ceramics. It is not suitable for PE/PP, PTFE, silicone, aluminum 7000, galvanized steel, copper, bronze or brass.

What gap can M422 fill?

M422 fills gaps up to 0.35 in without sagging thanks to its thixotropic formulation — suitable for irregular joint geometries.

How strong is M422 on steel?

This steel bonding adhesive delivers lap shear above 3,000 PSI on stainless steel and above 2,800 PSI on aluminum with cohesive failure, plus tensile strength of 3,050-3,450 PSI (ASTM D 638).

What is the mix ratio of M422?

M422 uses a 10:1 mix ratio by volume (9.6:1 by weight), dispensed through a static mixing nozzle from a dual cartridge, with a 4-6 minute open time and handling strength in 10-15 minutes.

How flexible is M422?

M422 is a high elongation methacrylate adhesive reaching 100% elongation (ASTM D 638) — the highest of the ADINOX Serie M line — absorbing vibration, impact and substrate movement.
